Mugwort
Association with Magic and Witchcraft
Mugwort is an herb that is deeply associated with magic, medicine, and witchcraft. Its history runs deep throughout European and North American spiritual traditions. It has been associated with the Greek Goddess Artemis, and its botanical name is Artemisia. This lovely green herb is linked with cycles of the moon, amplifying power and enhancing your dreams. It can be identified by its silver hairs, along the leaves, which seem to reflect the moon’s glow.
It is used in many modern magical traditions and by eclectic witches of all kinds for a deeper connection to their craft or in rituals honoring the Goddess.
It has also been linked to many of the Middle Ages Witch trials, as it was commonly used to accuse those of practicing the craft. Whether these individuals actually practiced spellcraft is a matter of historical interpretation, but mugwort was often used as a renowned herbal medicine ingredient. It was used for healing wounds and scars as well, and helping women get their cycles back on track after pregnancy or other gynecological issues. Its use in herbal medicine by wise women and Witches alike has made mugwort live in our modern pcyhes has a classical “Witchcraft” herb that every practitioner should know.
Though this history has linked it closely with magic, it has a long history in Chinese medicine. Mediterranean and Roman practices, and Significant European magic alike. In the Anglo-Saxon “Nine Sacred Herbs,” Mugwort is one of the most revered for Dream workings. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, mugwort is used in ‘moxibustion’, a technique where dried mugwort is burned near the skin to stimulate circulation and promote relaxation.
Dream Work and Lucid Dreaming
Mugwort is an herb that expands dreams and psychic visions. Mugwort tea has been known as a vision tea for centuries by European practitioners. It encourages lucid and prophetic dreams, and can be an ideal herb to work with when asking for more specific dreams or requesting clarity on a question. A sprig of mugwort has been placed under pillows or burned before sleep to induce vivid, psychic dreams. It’s also an herb that aids in astral projection or other meditative experiences that rewire our psyches to be opened for receiving.
One of the most interesting parts of mugwort in the modern age is that scientists are starting to have a deeper understanding of what it actually does to our brains. Mugwort is primarily associated with producing longer and more vivid REM sleep cycles. This is the part of our sleep cycle where we already produce dreams, so being able to stay in this period longer and recall it better can only help spiritual seekers to access prophetic dreams even more clearly.
A pinch of mugwort added to spell bottles, charm bags, or candle spells will boost the power of the working and assist you in receiving messages. It’s an ally for witches and magicians since it can adapt its inherent magical power to the intent of your spell.
Psychic Ability and Visions
Similar to its effects on the dreaming brain, mugwort can be extremely helpful in promoting overall psychic ability or opening the mind when we are feeling extra blocked from our psychic powers.
Many witches burn, smoke, or ingest tea with mugwort before they begin spell craft or divination. Hanging mugwort in your home, or specifically near where you meditate, can be helpful for any form of divination you practice.
Mugwort is classified scientifically as a very mild oneirogen, from the Greek oneiros, meaning "dream," and gen, meaning "to create.” essentially marking it as a plant that produces or enhances dream-like states of consciousness. Often used to facilitate vivid dreams, lucid dreaming, or divination.
Artemis and the Lunar Cycle
The scientific name for mugwort is Artemisia, unsurprisingly named after the Greek Goddess Artemis, goddess of the hunt, women, and the moon. This association alone evokes a connection to the divine feminine and the moon. This is compounded by the Roman and Greek belief that mugwort could be used to associate with a specific deity or goddess.
During springtime Artemis festivals in Greece, held under the full moon, participants would ingest mugwort. This act ritually symbolized "consuming the goddess" to either obtain her wisdom or her powers for a short time.
The Feminine Cycle
Just as the goddess Artemis has been said to protect women in pregnancy and childbirth, mugwort has long been associated with easing pregnancy, relieving PMS symptoms, and regulating irregular menstruation. Some scholars say it may have even been used as an ancient form of birth control. Though this has been highly debated as to the historical accuracy, some newer medical research shows mugwort can have an “anti-implantation” effect, furthering the belief of Mother Nature’s first birth control in the Mediterranean world!
This also links back to its association with the lunar cycle, as women in Ancient Greece, and nearly everywhere in the world, would track their cycles and sync themselves to the moon.
Even if you are not suffering from PMS or attempting to regulate pregnancy pains, mugwort can still be a beautiful herb to include in your spiritual practice to get in touch with your divine feminine energy. It can also help you lean into the Goddess of the hunt, Artemis, or Diana, as she is seen in Rome.
