The Strawberry Moon -What Is The Spiritual Significance?

The Strawberry Moon is the “nickname” given to the Full Moon that occurs in June. This is generally the first full moon of the summer season (after the summer solstice), or sometimes the last full moon of the spring season if it’s before the 21st.

This is a traditional naming system used by many indigenous groups, Native Americans, and European folk practices, depending on the region. The Celtic tradition sometimes referred to this as the Rose Moon for similar reasons, as this was when roses were first in full bloom. This Strawberry name is still used today in the Farmers' Almanac and many spiritual almanacs as well.

Our ancestors used this system of naming the full moons to keep track of the changing seasons. In our modern world, we often forget what a luxury it is to have standardized calendars, digital clocks, and an agreed-upon sense of seasons we can calculate. The ability to track time, the seasons, and be able to predict the timing of the year was vital to the survival of the tribe all over the world. This was a cross-cultural need, and this created a cross-cultural system of moon naming.

This wasn’t just to keep a “sense” of the year changing, but it was also imperative to the growth and harvesting of crops.

The Strawberry Moon is often the time in June when strawberries, blackberries, and other similar bushes are in full bloom and can be harvested. This is also true for roses, as stated before.

In some European mythology, it was even said that whatever day the Full Strawberry Moon landed was the exact day the strawberries would ripen to perfection, regardless of what time of the month the moon fell. In Celtic traditions, it was said that the roses sometimes bloom overnight during the full moon instead of their normal daytime blooming. Though this isn’t observed today by science, we may never know what magic was alive during these times. Regardless, this was a way for our ancestors to note when exactly we’d be reaching full bloom/ripeness.

The name also originated with Native American tribes, particularly the Algonquin, who used the same system of naming the moons to mark the seasons.

Considering its association with berries and the summer season beginning, this is an ideal time to cultivate magic for yourself and your family! The full moon is always a great time to bring in new manifestations, wishes, and dreams. It is a time in days gone by when witches and practitioners would gather to honor the fullest point of the lunar cycle, and the ever-changing nature of the world around us.

This was, and still is, an ideal time for manifesting and casting for new desires and blessings. You can utilize the Strawberry Moon in particular to manifest a bountiful and prosperous summer season. This is a time of fullness, of sunshine, and of growth and expansion. It can also be a time to reflect upon what you’ve been working hard on this year so far, and possibly what is coming to fruition now. This is a time to think of fullness, blooming, reaping the benefits of your hard work, and tipping points in creative and professional endeavors.

The Strawberry Moon asks us to take a moment to reflect on the highest point of this year. To notice the longest day, the longest sunshine, and the sense of peak to our personal stories as the year progresses.

Some Rituals To Do For The Strawberry Moon:

🍓 Light a pink or red candle anointed with Strawberry Moon oil, or another scented sweet spell oil. Consider carving your desires for this season into the candle.

🍓Plant seeds in your garden ahead of time to hopefully have them bloom around the moon. This takes some planning ahead, but it is well worth it to see your berries ripen by the moon!

🍓Take a moon bath. This can be as simple as using a spiritual bath salt, or simple Epsom salt with a few herbs associated with this moon. (See below for herb correspondences)

🍓Make a meal that includes strawberries! This may seem simple, but dedicating a meal or dessert you spend time and energy on can be a potent way to honor any moon or holiday. Consider a classic “Moon Cake” and ale with strawberry frosting or strawberry lemonade.

🍓Focus on abundance rituals! Consider doing a money spell or refreshing a money bowl around this time of year, and ask for a fruitful season, no pun intended.

🍓Consider spell craft for things coming to fruition. If we think of our internal world and mind as mirroring what is happening in nature, then this time of “full bloom” and fruit ripening. This is ideal for your personal dreams to come to fruition! What dreams have you been working on? What metaphoric seeds did you plant last season that you would like to bloom now?

🍓Manifesting new beauty or sensuality! Strawberries are associated with sensuality, love, new romance, and beauty magic. Consider inviting in new energy of romance and attraction, or looking into glamour magic for this time of year.
